GFA starts work on Ghana women’s football strategy for 2027-2031

Date:

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has begun reviewing its Womens Football Strategy before the current plan expires on 31 December 2026.

The next strategy will cover 2027 to 2031 and will follow an audit of progress made under the existing 2023-2026 framework. The association says the process is intended to move womens football in Ghana from its current gains towards a sustainable professional level.

Among the achievements of the current strategy are the introduction and continuation of the Football For Goals, Football For Girls and FIFA Womens Football Campaign programmes. Women involved in football have visited primary schools to engage girls, parents, teachers and communities, helping to encourage participation both on and off the pitch.

The programmes have also supported the development of young referees through the Catch Them Young Referees initiative. Capacity-building sessions at the GFA Technical Centre have contributed to their progress, with the policy of appointing only Women Match Officials for womens football also playing an important role.

More women have gained coaching qualifications, particularly former players. The GFA funded free Licence D courses and worked with FIFA to provide free Licence C training, while coaches holding C and B licences received support towards completing their Licence B and A badges. Training has also been provided for female administrators and womens clubs.

Under the education pillar, workshops for Womens Division One Club Administrators strengthened governance, organisation and management at regional level. The association says the programme supports more professional administration and the long-term development of womens clubs.

Grassroots football has expanded through the U15 Regional Girls Colts League, now operating in each of Ghanas 10 football regions after pilots in the Northern Region and Greater Accra. A U17 Girls Colts pilot is also under way, with lessons from it expected to guide a possible nationwide expansion.

The number of clubs, players, referees, match commissioners, women administrators and competitions has increased. The annual U15 Elite Girls Championship brings leading regional players together nationally, while the U15 regional league offers structured competition, talent identification and a pathway towards the national teams.

Ghanas U15 National Team are the African Schools champions after winning in Ghana in 2025 and Zimbabwe in 2026, and remain the holders. The annual Elite U17 Girls Championship continues to showcase regional talent, while the U17 Womens National Team has qualified for the world stage. Players are also being developed through the GFA Elite Academies.

Each of the 10 regions has a Womens Regional Division One League, with champions promoted to the Women Premier League, which has grown to 20 clubs. The GFA has also introduced the Womens Super Cup for the top eight Womens Premier League clubs.

A commercial strategy for the Womens Premier League is in its final phase. It aims to improve the competitions commercial value, brand and media profile, attract sponsors and partners, increase fan engagement and create sustainable revenue.

The GFA says it is working with FIFA Womens Football Development and internal stakeholders on the new strategy. The process includes an audit, stakeholder consultations, alignment with wider GFA plans, new targets and pillars, financial commitments, and a launch campaign.

Data gathered includes registrations, coaches, referees, administrators, viewing figures, attendances and commercial revenue. The GFA will next consult commercial partners, clubs, government and the media through a workshop.
